Preparing for Long-Duration Missions
Isolation and confinement studies are essential for human spaceflight preparation, providing controlled environments to understand and mitigate the challenges of long-duration missions.
Why Isolation Studies?
These studies offer unique opportunities to:
- Characterise psychological and physiological responses to isolation and confinement
- Develop strategies and countermeasures to prevent mission-endangering issues
- Extend research into related fields such as medicine, life support, and crew dynamics
By simulating conditions similar to those on deep-space missions, isolation studies help ensure crew health, performance, and safety during exploration beyond Earth.
ESA’s Role
ESA has participated in international isolation and confinement campaigns and is preparing to lead its own dedicated isolation studies in the near future, strengthening Europe’s contribution to human exploration research.
